Referee Development
Building a Strong Future for Southern Peninsula Basketball Association
Referee development has become a key area of focus for the Southern Peninsula Basketball Association (SPBA) in recent years, and this commitment remains steadfast for the future. Recognizing the crucial role referees play in the game, the association has made substantial investments in their development, including the provision of personnel, increased funding, and enhanced support over the next two years.
The SPBA has experienced remarkable growth in its Community Domestic Competition, fueled by the unwavering dedication of its clubs. To meet the demands of this expansion, the association has dedicated additional resources to the development, education, and retention of referees. As part of these efforts, the Referee Leadership team has been expanded, ensuring a stronger support system for referees.
The association has brought on board education officers who will serve as valuable guides, educators, and mentors for both junior and senior referees. Tony Newsome has joined the team to oversee Trainee Schools, offering a clear pathway for junior C grade officials and further educational opportunities up to the B grade level. Additionally, Bianca Vernon, a highly regarded member of the WNBL referee panel, is providing top-notch training, evaluations, and conducting A grade schools.
Tony and Bianca will play pivotal roles in guiding referees through their journey, highlighting pathways for growth in both junior and senior levels, and encouraging participation in Basketball Victoria (BV) events. To demonstrate their commitment to the referees, the association has allocated significant funds to ensure that those who participate in these events are fairly compensated.
Daniel Munns, a senior referee, Big V player, and Referee Evaluator, takes charge of rosters and referee administration. His wealth of experience and expertise is a valuable asset in supporting the referee community. Furthermore, the association has trained five senior referee/supervisors who will provide evaluation and guidance to trainee referees.
Over the next two years, the SPBA aims to conduct more entry-level schools. Alongside these schools, at least one A and one B grade school will be organized annually. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, the association will promote “female-only” schools and “adults-only” schools to ensure that all aspiring officials feel welcome and encouraged to join.
The SPBA places significant emphasis on the training and retention of officials by fostering a supportive and safe environment both on and off the court. The association ensures that referees are remunerated in line with BV recommendations, while also implementing a strict policy against referee abuse. Moreover, to further promote respect and safety, the SPBA is expanding the “green shirt” theme to include green whistle lanyards for referees under 18.
To provide professional support, the SPBA offers an Employee Assistance Program to its officials. Additionally, two senior referees have been designated as points of contact for referee welfare, prioritizing the well-being of referees within the association.
Ultimately, the SPBA aims to build a larger pool of senior referees, opening doors to greater participation in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Panel and, eventually, producing referees for the Big V. Through its comprehensive referee development initiatives, the SPBA is wholeheartedly committed to nurturing the growth and success of referees, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and opportunities to thrive in their roles.
