Sorrento Community Centre Partnership

We are extremely proud to announce we have teamed up with the Sorrento Community Centre to make basketball more accessible across the Peninsula!

This new partnership will see domestic games and programs run out of the one court facility in Sorrento. Initially this will see the addition of this court to our Saturday Domestic Competition which will act as the home court for a number of Sorrento and Rye team games.

On the partnership SPBA General Manager, Ben White explained “Currently some participants have to travel an 80 minute round trip to play basketball if they are playing a game at Dromana. Let alone the additional time during busy traffic periods on the southern end of the Peninsula. To have our some of our participants have to spend double the amount of time in the car then they would to play a domestic game on a regular basis is certainly creating barriers to participation for not only players, but coaches and referees too.
Working with Sorrento Community Centre we will be delivering fixtures whereby when a there is a combination of a Sorrento, Rye, Rosebud or Boneo teams, the Sorrento Community Centre will be used alongside our Hillview Stadium in Rosebud.”

Shane McMahon, Chairman of the Sorrento Community Centre Board said that “We are very pleased to have entered this partnership agreement. It provides for additional use of the Sorrento Community Centre facility and supports the Centre’s aim to work more closely with other community-based organisations. We are very much looking forward to further building on what is a mutually beneficial long term partnership, which will extend the benefits we can provide to our community.”

This partnership helps alleviate the significant court shortage on the Peninsula. However, we are continuing to work with local, state and federal government for further facilities with the support of Basketball Victoria and community groups. We are still at 100% capacity mid week and almost 100% on weekends.

SPBA would like to thank and acknowledge the significant work that the Sorrento Basketball Club have invested not only recently, but over the past three years building the foundation for basketball in Sorrento and the surrounding suburbs including a strong focus on building female participation.

As we return to sport as COVID-19 restrictions ease, we look forward to announcing further programs and initiatives with the Sorrento Community Centre!
