Basketball facilities on the Southern Peninsula have not grown with the sport’s popularity. Sadly, indoor sporting facilities lack on the Southern Peninsula, meaning sports such as volleyball and badminton are not even available to residents.
We have been working really closely with the Mornington Peninsula Shire and have received a great deal of support from our local member Chris Brayne and incredible guidance from our federal member Greg Hunt.
However, the Shire has recently had elections, and with so many new councillors, they may not be aware of the issues indoor sporting clubs face and, in particular, our Association. We have outgrown our facilities, and also, we must be one of the few basketball clubs that have had to cancel junior gams due to it being a washout. The leaks at Dromana have literally become mini waterfalls.
Councilors such as Antonella Celli have been incredible in their support, as have numerous Shire officers. The Shire is aware that we will require at least an additional 10 courts over the next 10 years to keep up with demand.
If you are passionate about our kids playing in courts, please engage in the budgetary process by commenting on and submitting proposals to the Shire. Let’s make them aware of our 2500 members’ thoughts.
Please remember that the councilors and Shire have been highly supportive thus far and keep comments respectful and productive.
We have developed an excellent relationship which we wish to continue moving forward.
