CLUBS at Southern Peninsula Basketball Association have recently ran a series of after school come and try sessions run by Beachcombers Basketball Club and Red Hill Basketball Club.
These junior clinics have been held at Red Hill Consolidated Primary School and Dromana Primary School, attracted approximately 80 and 60 kids respectively with most being brand new faces!
General Manager, Ben White discussed the clinics saying “We are in such a great place with all of our clubs and local schools now in engaging the community. We thank Mark Gilbert and the team at Red Hill for organising the first clinics and soon after John McCormick and the team at Beachcombers organising a further come and try day.”
One major focus was to bring excitement and new opportunities to young kids whilst also providing an opportunity to be active and involved within their own school. This is extremely exciting to bring the Southern Peninsula community together in this way. Competitions Manager, Jenna McCormick said on the recent sessions that “These sessions are the first step in providing both the opportunity and the knowledge of what basketball is and how SPBA can cater for a range of families throughout the peninsula.”
We have happily seen both Junior and Senior Sharks players make appearances at the clinics which has been a great way to form positive relationships with the kids and possibly serve as role models. Community Engagement Officer and Senior Women’s Head Coach, Peter Caspersz commented “Having the seniors involved shows the juniors that the pathway is being formed from the bottom to the top.” when asked about the importance of the senior players involvement and how it has helped with the junior’s development and enjoyment of the game. Caspersz also stated that “having seniors run the clinic also makes them appreciate where it all started.”
With our previous clinics being great successes, we would love to engage with many more primary schools in the future, please email Peter Caspersz at community@sthpen.com.au if your school or club is interested!
We thank all of the players and coaches for their help and cooperation in these clinics.
